Winter arrives at the Urban Cabin

January 20, 2012 by Beth Shepherd

I grew up in the northeast, upstate New York to be exact, where there was a LOT of snow, particularly during my youth in the 1960s. I remember the excitement of school closures and snow days, the beauty of first snowfall, and the way snowflakes feel when they land on my tongue.

And you know what? Some fifty years later in Seattle,  on the rare occasions when it does snow, it’s still as magical as ever.

I sit snug in my warm home, a cup of cocoa warming my hands, while cold winds blow and the flurry falls outside my window. Outside, birds scurry to find a bit of food and white drifts of snow shimmy and  shape-shift in our backyard. A quiet and peaceful time, this day of winter. A welcome respite from my usual hectic life, and a good reason to stay put, sit and watch.

Some might fend off a mid-life crisis by leaving the comforts of their corporate salary to jet off to a deserted island. Others might buy a Jaguar. I’ve chosen to dive head-long into my 50s and beyond by becoming a first-time parent. At any given moment you might find me holding a camera, a spade, a spatula or a suitcase. Or my little girl's hand. Adopted from Armenia, she puts the Pampers and Paklava into my life.
