Favorite things: Baby birds!

May 28, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

Baby birds! What’s not to like? Fuzzy, geeky, peepy balls of cuteness. I love this time of year, when everywhere you look there are feathered babies leaving their nests, trying out their new wings, walking in the awkward way baby birds do, swimming on top of the water with little spurts of speed, exploring the new world around them. Here are a few pictures I’ve taken of baby birds, mostly for my 366 Project. Baby goslings down at the edge of Lake Washington, a baby robin sitting on a wood chair in our yard, a baby finch being fed seed from his papa or mama, two baby Anna’s hummingbirds resting on our neighbor’s clothesline, and one Bushtit sitting on an obelisk in our garden. And for extra credit, see if you can find all four members of the finch family in the last photo!

Favorite Things: Birds

January 29, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

I love birds. I’m not sure what it is about them–maybe their flight which, to me, looks like atmospheric ballet. Whether it’s tiny birds like the bold Anna’s Hummingbirds who frequent our yard, majestic eagles flying over Lake Washington or herons standing in the shallow waters of the shore, I enjoy watching them and hearing them. And photographing them. I’ve spent hours taking bird photos–their colors, habits and quirks. Even the common pigeon and obnoxious crow are fun to capture with my camera. Here are few of my bird pictures:

The Quintessential Christmas Bird

December 10, 2014 by Beth Shepherd

Of all the birds who visit our garden, I think the hummingbird is my favorite. He buzzes around the garden like a bee. His petite size belies his alpha bird personality–for a tiny bird, he is fierce and determined.

During the winter months I miss some of my feathered friends, who packed their tiny bags and headed for sunnier climes. But we always have a few devoted Anna’s Hummingbirds who are “regulars” at our backyard diner. With his green cloak of feathers and bright red cravat, Mr. Hummer (as we call him) is the quintessential Christmas Bird.

Village of Fayetteville (New York) Bird Preserve (Gramlich Bird Sanctuary)

February 21, 2013 by Beth Shepherd

When my parents purchased the home where I grew up in Fayetteville, New York, one of the selling factors was that the property backed up to a bird preserve. My father reasoned that because the land was protected, no one would build on it and our home would always be surrounded by woods in the back. As someone who loves birds, I feel grateful to have grown up in a place where they were literally in my own backyard.

The Village of Fayetteville Bird Preserve, otherwise known as the Gramlich Bird Sanctuary is on about eight  acres of land on both sides of Limestone Creek east of Highbridge St. at Audubon Parkway. In 1987, the area was listed as 10.2 acres, either because the creek had changed course or the original measurement was not precise.

The land was given to the village in 1933 by Jacob and Belle Gramlich to provide a forever wild area along Limestone Creek. They named it the Fayetteville Bird Preserve as a memorial to Frederick M. Gramlich who died in 1933, a few months after his graduation from the naval Academy at Annapolis. A bronze plaque on the east side of Highbridge St., just north of the entrance to Hullar Enterprises records the gift.

The land was originally planted with about 3,000 seedlings in the late 1920s by Fred Gramlich and his brother, J.E. Gramlich, as part of work for a Boy Scout conservation merit badge.

In the 1960s, a local Boy Scouts cleared paths and thinned the over-growth. The Fayetteville Garden Club planted shrubs to provide food and nesting locations. Several clean-up projects by Boy Scouts were done during the 1970s.

In the winter, when the birds are farther and fewer between, there is a beautiful stillness. The trees are covered in white, and walking along the paths, over a crunchy blanket of snow, it truly feels like a sanctuary.

Bird by bird

September 30, 2011 by Beth Shepherd

We are proud of The Urban Cabin’s little backyard. It’s a certified “Wildlife Habitat,” and we have so much fun watching their comings and goings.

Last week, we experienced a veritable Bird Festival…so many birds, of different types–ALL AT ONCE–in our yard. It was spectacular. In the first picture you can see the baby Flicker, the Bluejay and the Starling. But what you can’t see is Anna’s Hummingbird, the robin on the fence or the Downy Woodpecker in the tree. And then, the deluge of birds that followed.

Here’s what we saw:

How many birdsHow many birds do you see?

Baby FlickerBaby Flicker. We often see the adults, but rarely the offspring.

Red-breasted FinchRed-breasted Finch. Their chests get more red as the summer progresses.

Stellar JayStellar Jay. We see lots of Scrub Jays but not as many of the Stellars. Love their “do.”

RobinRobin. He was watching his family take a bath.

Robins fightingThere was a LOT of “argument” as more birds jostled for space on the birdbath.

Gaggle of starlingsThen the Starlings show up. Party crashers for sure.

Big Papa says they are the “drunken soccer fans of the bird world.”

Downy woodpeckerDowny Woodpecker. This was  first sighting for us. Obviously he got the memo that day.

Anna's HummingbirdLast, but not least (though where size is concerned, definitely least), an Anna’s Hummingbird. I LOVE these little guys.

Some might fend off a mid-life crisis by leaving the comforts of their corporate salary to jet off to a deserted island. Others might buy a Jaguar. I’ve chosen to dive head-long into my 50s and beyond by becoming a first-time parent. At any given moment you might find me holding a camera, a spade, a spatula or a suitcase. Or my little girl's hand. Adopted from Armenia, she puts the Pampers and Paklava into my life.
