366 Project: Four things I’ve learned during my fifth month

June 30, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

Tomorrow I reach the half-way point for my 366 Project! 183 days of photos taken–183 left to go. And you know what? I’m having a blast. I really enjoy the challenge of finding something photo-worthy every day. Here are four things I’ve learned during June, my fifth month taking (at least) one photo every day.

Anna's Hummingbird

I can take pictures of my kid. This month I pushed myself to try to get more photos of my daughter.  And I did.  Nine photos made it to my photo-of-the-day, a huge accomplishment for me! I discovered a few tricks to help her feel more comfortable and willing to get in photo-mode to begin with, and I tried to drop my expectations that she look at me or smile. What I want to capture is my daughter in her element, and I think I was pretty successful…and that felt good.

I can’t go too long without a dose of nature. On the days where I was solely photographing my daughter, I missed photographing the natural world. Rain, shine, wind, calm, animals, plants. Being surrounded by nature makes my world go round. And what a beautiful world it is!

There are so many different ways to frame a shot. I can shoot close-up or crop my photo and catch every tiny feather in an Anna’s Hummingbird, or I can widen my view with a panorama. I can shoot  straight at my subject or looking down at them from above. The angle I choose totally changes the mood and the “story.” I’m enjoying experimenting: with crops, macro, wide angle, different lenses, times of day, light. It’s fun to look at a shot and see what “grabs me.”

Maybe I can make money with my photography. This is something I’ve wanted to try most of my life. So…I got my business license! Beth Shepherd Photography, LLC was born, just like me, in the month of June. People reinvent themselves all the time, so why not me? Photography has been my love for most of my life. I wish I’d followed my passion decades ago but since I’m still alive and able, why not now?

Here’s June:

366 Project: Four things I’ve learned during my fourth month

June 2, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

When I first started my 366 Project, I worried whether I’d make it through the first month, taking pictures every day. Here I am four months later and still at it! I am loving my project and find the more I shoot, the more I discover about photography and my own strengths and limitations. What I’ve learned this month:

duck

Those darn birds: Okay, I confess I am downright addicted to bird photography. Especially this month. Even though my garden is going gangbusters and occasionally I coerce my 5-year-old to get in the frame, I am absolutely obsessed with those birdies. Chickadees building a nest in our birdhouse, flying back and forth to feed their growing family; ducks and geese at Lake Washington; bold little hummingbirds flitting about, and all the usual suspects: robins, finches, jays, sparrows. The air is filled with song and my shots with feathers.

Think outside the box–or inside it: My yard is really tiny, 18×40. It is surrounded by a fence. I used to feel as though I was living inside a box, which motivated me to grow plants everywhere I could, around the edges, up the fence, and fill the middle with planter beds. Ironically, being constricted to a small space encourages me to find interesting angles (shoot the flower from the side rather than straight on), to look at details (ladybug on the rosebud) and pay attention to the tiniest of subjects (a feather on the deck). At first glance, the “view” seems small…but when you really LOOK, the possibilities are limitless!

Inspiration is all around me: Honestly, if I ended up being stuck in my tiny yard for the next year, there would always be something interesting to shoot. Plants, birds, my cats…something new is growing, blooming and dying. There are fascinating colors, shapes, movement, and I love to capture all of it. That said, I am truly blessed to live in a breathtakingly gorgeous city: Seattle. Everywhere I go I am surrounded by beauty, both the natural and man-made world around me.

Share the journey: My photographer communities, Mamas with Cameras 365/52 Week Project Wonder Women and 365Project, INSPIRE me to grow and be a better photographer. Seeing the amazing shots my fellow photogs take gives me new ideas and challenges me to find new angles (literally). I am certain I would not be shooting every day without the commitment I made to shoot and share.

And with that…here’s May!

Favorite things: Baby birds!

May 28, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

Baby birds! What’s not to like? Fuzzy, geeky, peepy balls of cuteness. I love this time of year, when everywhere you look there are feathered babies leaving their nests, trying out their new wings, walking in the awkward way baby birds do, swimming on top of the water with little spurts of speed, exploring the new world around them. Here are a few pictures I’ve taken of baby birds, mostly for my 366 Project. Baby goslings down at the edge of Lake Washington, a baby robin sitting on a wood chair in our yard, a baby finch being fed seed from his papa or mama, two baby Anna’s hummingbirds resting on our neighbor’s clothesline, and one Bushtit sitting on an obelisk in our garden. And for extra credit, see if you can find all four members of the finch family in the last photo!

Mother’s Day: Mama’s IN the picture

May 7, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

Mother and daughter on Mother's Day

I am always behind the camera, especially these days as I continue to work on my 366 Project, taking one photo every day for a year. Much as I love taking pictures, sometimes it’s nice to be on the other side of the camera. Last week I got my chance, in a pre-Mother’s Day event called Mama’s in the Picture, a benefit for Soulumination, a wonderful organization that celebrates the lives of children and parents facing life-threatening conditions by providing professional photographs of these special individuals.

The event was organized by two of the most amazing photographer moms I know, Wenmei Hill and Mary Balmaceda. They are the founders of Mamas with Cameras, a Seattle group with workshops and meetups for shutter happy mamas. Like me.

I’ve been an active member of the group for over five years–Wow! Has it been that long? I joined over a year before we adopted our daughter and used to joke that I was the only mother there who…wasn’t a mother. Now I am! I look forward to each monthly meetup because I always learn something new. Plus I get to hang out with some of the coolest photog mamas in Seattle. mom and daughter

Since I am so rarely in the picture, I frequently wonder what my daughter will think when she gets older about my role in the family. Where was Mama on that trip to Hawaii? How come so many of the family photos have me, Papa or the cats in them but not Mama? Why are there so few pictures of Mama with me.

I believe this is something moms wonder about a lot. Our jobs are largely behind the camera. We schedule and organize, plan for parties and play dates, shop for clothes and food, make meals and shuttle kids to sports events–we use our mama superpowers to stealthily make it all happen–behind the scenes. And that is why I was so excited for the opportunity to be IN the picture. Years from now, when my daughter looks back on these shots, I hope she’ll know that even though mama might not have been in many of our family pictures, she was always there.

A HUGE shout out to Wenmei Hill and Mary Balmaceda for giving us a mamas a chance to do something we rarely get to do; to Soulumination for the stunning venue; and, to Mamas with Cameras. You mamas are my inspiration in every way!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Highlights from Hawaii: Photos of the Big Island

April 23, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

We just came back from two weeks on the Big Island of Hawaii. Although the weather in Seattle had Hawaii’s beat hands down (oh the irony), we did see and do some amazing things. I saw my first active volcano and my first native Hawaiian owl, breathed thin air at 13,000+ feet on Mauna Kea and experienced the wonder of snorkeling with manta rays! Here are a few photographic highlights.

366 Project: Four things I’ve learned during my third month

April 14, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

March 31 and I’m 1/4 towards the finish line of one photo each day for a year. By December 31, 2016 I hope to have amassed 366 photos. Every month I learn something new about myself as a photographer and a person. Here are four things I’ve learned this month.

Photos March

Patience or luck: I have had some pretty good luck, like the day I caught a beaver swimming below me and an eagle in our tree later that afternoon. But I also think my luck has to do with patience. I will sit and wait until that cormorant lifts his leg and takes a step. Or I’ll take twenty shots of a tulip from several angles at different times of the day until I get a shot that speaks to me.

I enjoy “happy accidents”: For all my planning, there have been a few shots that were happy accidents. I took a picture of my cats through the window screen and I’ll be darned, but it looked like a tapestry. And those birds that kept flying away as soon as I stepped out onto our deck? Well, I clicked away through our glass door. The shots were blurry but the blur looked cool and painterly.

I have a good eye: I am always putting a frame around my view. My eyes are drawn to patterns in plants, a tiny detail. You know how in the movie “The Sixth Sense,” the young boy Cole says “I see dead people?” Well I see photographs. Everywhere I go.

I love nature but…: On more days than not, my photos are of nature: plants, animals, scenery. I do find shooting nature meditative. But I would also love to photography people more. I have taken a few shots for our cousins who were pregnant and just had a baby. My own two-legged beloveds? They REALLY do not like to be in front of the camera. So–I need to find some creative ways to catch them!

366 Project: Four things I’ve learned during my second month

March 3, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

I’m two months into my 366 Project. One photo each day, all year. Here are four things I’ve learned during my second month of this project.

February 2016 collage

I’m big on little things: I’ve always been a detail-oriented person (unless we’re talking about technology–see last month’s post), especially where visuals are involved. My eyes are drawn to tiny buds on a Clematis vine, the patterns made by a goose’s feathers. Looking back at the photos I’ve taken over the past two months, I notice there are a lot of close-ups. That or a big picture panoramas. Maybe I’m not much of a middle-ground gal?

Put a bird on it: Not a revelation, but still worth noting, 1/3 of my shots in January and nearly half of my shots in February are of birds or have a bird in the picture. One of the mamas in my Mamas with Cameras/365-52 Project Wonder Women commented, “You’re a bird whisperer.” I do love birds, so this may be true.

If it’s not in the air, it’s in the ground: Most of my photos are nature shots. I do manage to include a few photos each month of my sweet cats and my spirited daughter, but for the most part I’m a nature girl. It doesn’t seem to matter whether the flowers and plants are living or dead. I’m fascinated by them all.

I’m eclectic: Sounds better than unfocused or all-over-the-board, doesn’t it? Black and white, intense color, dreamy and diffuse, high definition, close-up, far away. I suppose that’s what this project is all about: experimenting, practicing…and finding my photographic self along the way.

Thanks again to my virtual 365project.org friends. And Mamas with Cameras, 365/52 Project Wonder Women–you mamas are the bomb!

Favorite things: Spring blossoms!

February 27, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

Spring is magical–my favorite season. My spirits are always lifted come February’s end as Spring blossoms. Each day a new surprise awaits. Trees bear tiny specks of color which soon burst into leaves. Delicate buds in Easter shades of pink, purple and yellow pop up in every corner. Birds come back to make their nests and fill the air with beautiful music.

Here are a few of the photographs from my “366 Project” that shout out: Spring blossoms!

Favorite things: Whiskers on kittens

February 20, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens

~Maria, Sound of Music

You knew this was coming, right? Crazy cat lady that I am. But truly, how can you not love whiskers on kittens? Definitely one of my favorite things!

Winnie’s whiskers are one of the first things people mention when they see her. They are indeed long and luxurious, almost wavy, which is ironic because when we first adopted her she had noticeably fewer whiskers and many of the whiskers she did have were shorter than normal with blunt ends, almost as though they’d been cut. Thankfully, Winslow’s whiskers are now her pride and joy.

kitten whiskersWinnie’s whiskers

Wally (Wallingford) has fine whiskers that curve in an arc. He has a fair number of them but they are fine and super soft like the rest of him. He is the sweetest big lug of a cat.

kitten whiskersWally’s whiskers

Miss Maggie (Magnolia) had the most amazing eyes, round and clear, at times blue or green. They were the first thing that people would comment on (second to her sweet disposition). Her whiskers were numerous and quite bold. The staccato to her otherwise gentle personality.

catMaggie’s whiskers

Mr. Madison (Maddy) was the “Pig-Pen” of cats. He always had a layer of fluff and dander floating a few millimeters off his fur. If you look closely at his whiskers you can see a piece of fluff, on the left, hanging on for dear life. He was my first cat, super smart, quirky and a great companion. I love this photo Joel took of him “meditating” on our old porch railing.

I sure love my cats. They’ve seen me through a lot. It’s hard for me to imagine life without a cat or two.

366 Project: Four things I’ve learned during my first month

February 3, 2016 by Beth Shepherd

January 1st I embarked on a photographic voyage. My destination? One photograph, every day, for a full year. Here are a four things I’ve learned during the first month of my 365 project:

Lichen and moss

I am a perfectionist with limited technical skills. Not the best combination. When you look at one of my photographs, I want you to see exactly what I saw and maybe even feel what I felt in the moment I snapped the shutter.

However, technology has never been my strong-suit. My eyes glaze over whenever I try to read a manual. Yet photography requires a certain level of technical comfort, both in being able to use my camera to the best of its (and my!) ability and in knowing how to post-process my pictures in a way that brings them to life.

I am overly self-critical. I spent hours putting together my collage of photographs. Several wise (and experienced) mamas from my Mamas with Cameras group offered advice, and suggested websites and programs to help me achieve my goal. I looked at their collages, with orderly rows of squares and lovely photos and wanted to do what they were doing. But mine? To me it looked like a mishmash of sizes and subjects. Why couldn’t I figure this out? Why can’t I identify my niche?

Guess what? As soon as I posted it, in came the kudos: I like how all the photos aren’t the same dimensions. That’s really neat! I feel a bit limited by my squares, and you did a great job! Your photographs are very serene.

I have a color palette! Who knew? Not me, apparently, but one of the comments on my collage made me think. Our templates all have different tones and such. Yours feels so cohesive, almost like one of those Pinterest color palette swatch kits.

I did a double-take. I looked at my collage, and then I looked at several of the other photographer’s collages. Sure enough, I could see exactly what she was observing. Some of the collages had palettes of warm tones: golds and browns. Other collages were bright and playful. And mine? Well it does indeed have its own je ne sais quois.

I love photography! This isn’t news to me or to most people who know me, but taking pictures every day for 31 days has confirmed…I like it. I really like it. Honestly, I could spend hours behind the camera (and post-processing too but let’s not go there). I find it both thrilling and soul satisfying. As with gardening, there are few things I do where I completely lose track of time and let the moment envelop me. Photography is my meditation.

Of course, let’s see how I feel about this after 335 more days. Meanwhile, here’s January! Take a look.

photography

Thanks to all the folks participating in 365project.org who’ve been commenting on my photos and stroking my ego. And a special shout-out to Mamas with Cameras, particularly our 365/52 Project Wonder Women–I am so grateful for your support and wisdom. Click on Mamas!

And you? What takes you to that place inside yourself?

It’s all about the journey,

Some might fend off a mid-life crisis by leaving the comforts of their corporate salary to jet off to a deserted island. Others might buy a Jaguar. I’ve chosen to dive head-long into my 50s and beyond by becoming a first-time parent. At any given moment you might find me holding a camera, a spade, a spatula or a suitcase. Or my little girl's hand. Adopted from Armenia, she puts the Pampers and Paklava into my life.
